I’ve spoken with so many people who really hate working for the ‘man’, who are desperate to take control of their life, work hours that suit them, do something special and carve out their own destiny, but they don’t have a clue where to start. Some don’t even know what they want to do. They just want to do something.
I’m not sure about you, but so many of those wanting to run their own business, have a ton of transferable business skills too that would give them a great start (though self employment finds you in control of things you hadn’t even considered when you run your own little empire – especially in the early days). Sometimes it’s just a lack of confidence or fear of failure that stops them even starting.
I’ve been running my own businesses now for more years than I care to admit – a lady doesn’t share any clues to her age, and I’ve spent thousands of hours researching, scheduling, updating websites, blogging, budgeting, marketing, selling, content creation, financial planning, when others have been watching Netflix or complaining they are just so busy and have no time to afford to a business.
Here’s the stark unsexy reality, if the three working benefits below are a deal breaker for you, running your own business probably isn’t for you. Hate to be a party pooper, but they are a luxury:
- Sick pay
- Holiday pay
- Regular wage
Here’s the great news, you could build up a side business whilst still working in the rat race, it will likely take a little longer for you to achieve your version of success, but we all have the same amount of hours in the day, it’s just how you choose to spend them that makes a world of difference.
If, however, the above are of no big importance to you because your passion is stronger, or you have a super supportive partner encouraging you to fly high and they can subsidise your life for a bit, as long as you are:
- Self motivated: This is easy if you are doing something you love!
- Can balance the books for the first year of trading, whilst you establish yourself within your chosen field.
- Service driven: The ability and desire to anticipate, recognise and meet potential customers needs, sometimes even before those needs are articulated, is gold!
- Not allergic to social media: I’m sorry but most industries will require you to have half a clue.
Then you’re three quarters of the way there! All you need to do is decide what you want to do and take that first step.
